A 67-year-old Brooklyn woman died from her injuries sustained in a pedestrian accident. The victim was hit by a private sanitation truck, which officials said fled the scene of the crash. According to a CBS New York news report, the fatal collision occurred early morning on Jan. 16 when the woman was struck and dragged by a private sanitation truck at the busy intersection of 86th Street and Bay Parkway. The truck driver did not stop and police are still looking for this hit-and-run driver.
NYPD collision investigators are reviewing cameras in the area for clues into what occurred. A witness said she saw the victim every day on her way to work. We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of this pedestrian accident victim.
Series of Pedestrian Accidents
Since the start of this year, at least eight pedestrians have been killed by vehicles across the city’s five boroughs. This fatal incident comes just days after city officials and stakeholders representing trucking associations came together to discuss new initiatives, which they hope will help address the problem.
One initiative is to call on national truck manufacturers who sell trucks in Europe and the United States to install sensors around the truck so that a driver can get images of nearby pedestrians and bicyclists especially when making a turn. City Council members say such technology may be lifesaving. The goal is to implement this initiative by 2024. This pedestrian accident is the second one involving a sanitation truck in recent weeks. On Jan. 7, a 10-year-old boy was killed and his mother was seriously injured after a city sanitation truck hit them while backing out of a driveway in Queens.
Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the private sanitation truck, which allegedly struck this woman allegedly failed to remain at the scene and render aid, as the law requires of all motorists. If you or a loved one has been injured in a car crash where the driver fled the scene and has not been identified or found, it is important that you take a number of steps including filing a police report, gathering evidence from the scene and getting prompt medical attention, etc.
If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy even though the driver has not been identified or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. It is important to remember in these types of cases that the injured pedestrians may be able to seek compensation for injuries or losses even if they were not walking in a marked crosswalk. You should retain an experienced personal injury lawyer right away to help protect your legal rights. A family who has lost a loved one in a hit-and-run crash may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
