A 26-year-old woman was killed after suffering injuries in a pedestrian accident in Queens, which officials say, involved and hit-and-run taxicab driver. According to a report in the New York Post, the woman was walking on the sidewalk near Queens Boulevard and 63rd Road in Rego Park, just about half a mile from her home on 98th Street, when she was struck and killed.
Witnesses said a 55-year-old driver of the 2005 Lincoln Town Car, was pulling out of a gas station at the time of the crash. The driver is said to have kept driving after hitting the victim but was stopped at the intersection of 62nd Drive and Junction Boulevard, just over a block away, according to the NYPD.
The driver was initially taken into police custody and questioned. However, officials let him go without being charged. An investigation is ongoing. The woman’s family said she worked as a floor manager at her father’s Hell’s Kitchen restaurant. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family for their tremendous loss.
Pedestrians in Peril
New York City is known to be a dangerous place for pedestrians. Statistics from the New York City Department of Transportation show that pedestrians are nearly 10 times more likely to be killed in traffic accidents than the motor vehicle occupant involved in a collision. This is not surprising as pedestrians have no protection when a crash occurs while a vehicle’s safety features usually prevent motorists from being injured.
Statistics also show that drivers who fail to yield cause more than one-fourth or 27 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents. Drivers are required under the law to follow speed limits and yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks. However, this doesn’t always happen. Drivers who are impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent or careless, tend to cause pedestrian accidents that result in serious injuries or fatalities.
