Woman Killed in Coney Island Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident

A 41-year-old woman identified as Tamika Richards was killed and an 18-year-old man was injured in a hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn the night of March 3. According to news reports, the two pedestrians were in a crosswalk at West 24th Street and Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island when they were struck by a red pickup truck.

The driver did not remain at the scene and drove away westbound on Mermaid Avenue. Richards was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The 18-year-old victim is recovering from his injuries at a hospital and is expected to survive. The investigation is ongoing. We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of Tamika Richards and wish the injured victim the very best for a quick and full recovery.

Compensation for Injuries

New York law states that it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash. Often in hit-and-run crashes, the victims or families that have lost loved ones find themselves burdened with significant medical expenses and other related costs. These types of accidents also have the potential to result in debilitating or life-threatening injuries, which can leave victims with lifelong disabilities.

Pedestrian accidents can result in major injuries or even fatalities. Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

If you have been injured in a hit-and-run crash, it is important that you take a number of steps including filing a police report, gathering evidence from the scene and getting prompt medical attention. You should also contact an experienced New York City hit-and-run lawyer promptly.

The driver of the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run collision and the vehicle’s owner can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Such drivers — when located — can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. Our law firm recovered $2,000,000 (two million dollars) in a hit-and-run accident.
