Hit and Run AccidentA woman was left with serious injuries after she was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. According to a news account in the Yonkers Daily Voice, the hit-and-run accident occurred in front of a home in the 300 block of Prescott Street in the Nodine Hill neighborhood in Yonkers. A male driver fled the scene after hitting the victim. The woman was transported to a hospital in the Bronx with major injuries, but is expected to survive. The accident is under investigation.
Hit-and-Run Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one out of every eight traffic accidents nationwide is a hit-and-run. Pedestrians account for more than 60 percent of hit-and-run victims. NHTSA reports that although the total number of nonfatal crashes declined steadily in the period between 2003 and 2006, the ratio of hit-and-run collisions remained unchanged.
Victims Suffer the Impact
Leaving the scene of a car accident is against New York law. Motorists who are involved in a car accident are required to immediately stop at the scene of the crash, wait until authorities arrive, exchange information with the other parties and obtain assistance for the injured victim.
When the at-fault motorist is not located, it is the hit-and-run victim who is left facing all the expenses including those associated with the treatment and recovery of his or her injuries. Please remember if a hit-and-run driver has injured you, you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy even though the driver has not been identified or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household.
