Upper East Side Delivery Truck Collision Kills Pedestrian and Bicyclist

A pedestrian and a bicyclist who was delivering food were both killed in a collision with a box truck on the Upper East Side the morning of Dec. 24. According to a New York Daily News report, the crash occurred at the intersection of Third Avenue and East 61st Street when the driver of a specialty foods truck heading west hit the victims before jumping a curb and crashing into a fire hydrant.

The driver reportedly told the police that his gas pedal got stuck as he turned to head north on Third Avenue. Both victims were in the crosswalk. Police said the truck driver and his partner had just made a delivery nearby and had gotten back into the truck. However, the partner hadn’t climbed all the way in when the driver took off. Police said the partner fell off the truck and injured his ankle.

Deadly Year for Traffic Accidents

The driver has been arrested, but hasn’t been charged yet, police said. The Daily News reports that the truck driver passed a breath alcohol test but refused to have the inside of his mouth swabbed for further testing. A witness who was working close by said a good Samarian tried in vain to save the pedestrian by giving the person CPR.

Both victims were rushed to a local hospital where they died from their injuries. This is the second time in the past 10 days that a food delivery truck has been connected to the death of a delivery bicyclist on the Upper East Side. The food delivery truck involved in the Christmas Eve crash had been cited with 270 parking violations just over the past two years, the Daily News reports based on city records.

Illegally parked food delivery trucks pose a huge danger for pedestrians and bicyclists in the city. On Dec. 13, a delivery worker on a small moped was killed when he collided with a food delivery truck that was illegally parked on First Avenue to unload items.

So far, 14 food delivery workers have died this year, 11 of them in traffic accidents. The New York City Department of Transportation has said 2021 has been the deadliest year since Mayor Bill de Blasio assumed office in 2014 and launched his Vision Zero program with the ambitious goal of eliminating all traffic accident fatalities.
