Two Men Killed in Brooklyn Fire

Two men suffered fatal burn injuries in a New York fire that engulfed four buildings. According to a news report in The New York Post, the fatal house fire started at 16 Covert Street in Brooklyn the night of May 13, 2011. The fire started on the top floor of the three-story building and quickly spread. A 45-year-old man was killed when he tried to escape the flames by jumping from his bedroom window. Another man was found dead. It is unclear at this time what caused the fire or if the building had working fire alarms and sprinklers.
Catastrophic fires are not uncommon in New York. When a fire quickly spreads within a building, or from one building to another, it must be determined if the building was built to code. Did the buildings have working fire alarms and smoke detectors? Did the property owners install sprinklers to help protect the occupants? Were the buildings properly maintained? Negligent property owners may be held liable for the damages, losses and injuries suffered on their properties. These fires can also cause smoke inhalation injuries, which can prove fatal.
An injured victim may file a personal injury claim to pursue compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses and other losses. The family of a victim killed in a New York fire may file a wrongful death claim to receive financial compensation for damages including funeral expenses, loss of companionship, lost future income and inheritance, and pain and suffering, etc.
If you have lost a loved one in a New York fire accident, it may be in your best interest to contact a skilled wrongful death attorney. A knowledgeable attorney will work with fire marshals and investigators to prove liability for an accident to ensure that the at-fault party is held responsible.
