Six people, including two children, were injured in a pedestrian accident in Washington Heights. According to a WABC news report, the string of events began the evening of March 15 when 34-year-old Deanna Cimaglia lost control of a sedan at Broadway and West 190th Street. Investigators say the women drove the car, which they say was stolen, onto the sidewalk slamming into six people and crashing into a funeral home. Bystanders rushed over to help the victims.
Injuries Reported
At least one of the victims was pinned under the vehicle, officials said. Cimaglia exited the vehicle and ran before coming back to the scene of the accident. The six people who were hit suffered injuries. A 63-year-old woman sustained a fractured leg and broken pelvis. A 41-year-old man suffered bleeding to his head. A 25-year-old women said she experienced leg pain and another adult also suffered a non-life-threatening injury.
Two young girls — ages 3 and 4 — suffered “minor bleeding” to their faces. All victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Cimaglia was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a license. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the injured victims. We wish them all the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Reckless Driving and Pedestrian Accidents
Reckless driving is one of the main causes of major injury pedestrian accidents in New York City. Some examples of negligent (careless) driving include impaired driving, operating a vehicle while distracted, speeding and failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians. Drivers are required under the law to exercise due care when it comes to sharing the road with pedestrians.
Speeding may cause drivers to lose control of the vehicle, which in turn can result in serious or even catastrophic or fatal injuries for pedestrians. Pedestrian accidents have the potential to result in injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, broken bones and internal organ damage. Greater speed also increases the severity of the crash. Cars traveling faster have more kinetic energy. So, when they collide with another vehicle, the damage is much more and the injuries to vehicle occupants can be much more severe.
Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
