Car Accidents Caused by Red Light Runners
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), red light runners cause hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands of serious injuries each year. IIHS reports that in 2022 alone, 1,149 people were killed in crashes that involved red light running. Half of those killed were pedestrians, bicyclists and people in other vehicles who were hit by the red-light runners. Also in 2022, more than 107,000 people were injured in crashes involving red-light runners.
A 2022 survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety showed that among drivers involved in fatal red-light-running multiple-vehicle crashes in 2022, those who ran red lights were more likely than other drivers to be male, to be younger, and to have prior crashes or alcohol-impaired driving convictions. The red-light runners also were more likely to be speeding or alcohol-impaired at the time of the crash and less likely to have a valid driver’s license.
In New York, traffic laws governing red lights are strict and ensure the safety of all road users. Under the law, when approaching a red light, drivers must come to a complete stop before the marked stop line, crosswalk, or intersection. Failure to stop at a red light can result in a traffic ticket, points on one’s driving record, and potentially, hefty fines.
