Jayden Flores, 14, was killed in a Long Island bicycle accident the morning of Nov. 6. According to a CBS New York news report, the teen was riding his e-bike to Mepham High School in North Bellmore when he was struck by an SUV. His mother, Tania Salazar, said her son was wearing a helmet, but that wasn’t enough to save him from the force of the impact. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said the 45-year-old driver of the SUV was heading south on Bellmore Avenue when the collision occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Jayden Flores for their heartbreaking loss.
Bicycle Accidents Involving Children
Bicycle accidents involving children and teens in Long Island school zones have become a growing safety concern. Many students ride their bikes to and from school. But congested roads, distracted driving and inadequate infrastructure increase the risk of serious collisions. School zones are meant to be safe areas and yet, speeding drivers, poor visibility at intersections and a lack of dedicated bike lanes often put young bicyclists in danger.
According to local safety advocates, many of these accidents occur during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times when traffic is heaviest. Drivers often fail to yield or pay attention to bicyclists on the road. Communities across Long Island have been calling for stronger safety measures including clearer signage, speed cameras and protected bike paths near schools.
Children involved in bicycle accidents often suffer serious injuries such as broken bones, head trauma, abrasions and internal injuries. Head injuries, in particular, are among the most dangerous and can lead to long-term brain damage or death. Even at low speeds, a collision with a vehicle or a resulting hard fall on pavement can cause severe injuries or even death.
Compensation for Bicycle Accident Victims
Compensation and the worth of the case will depend on the nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the victim as well as the amount of negligence (carelessness) on the part of the driver. In such cases, negligent (careless) motorists or passengers can be held responsible for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitative treatment, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
In cases of serious injury, the victim may be entitled to compensation for future medical care and a loss of earning capacity if the injuries prevent them from returning to work. Pain and suffering, emotional distress, and diminished quality of life can also be factors in calculating compensation. Families of deceased victims can also seek compensation for their losses by filing a wrongful death claim.
