East Village Bicycle AccidentDaria Serkov, 15, was killed in a bicycle accident in the East Village after the Citi Bike in which she was a passenger was struck by a large truck. According to a news report, a 16-year-old girl was riding the bicycle west on East 14th Street the night of Sept. 18. The two victims on the bicycle were hit by the truck that was turning from 14th Street onto First Avenue. Streetsblog.org said a video showed the bicyclist trying to continue across 14th Street when they were hit.

Ongoing Investigation and Dangerous Conditions

Both girls were transported to Bellevue Hospital where Serkov died from her injuries. The 16-year-old suffered a leg injury, but was reported to be in stable condition. The driver of the truck, remained at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of Daria Serkov and wish the injured bicyclist the very best for a quick and full recovery.

Transportation Alternatives pointed out that bicyclists who are traveling on 14th Street have to cross many lanes of traffic if they are turning onto the north or south avenues, as in this case. The traffic safety advocacy group said in a statement that there is “no bike infrastructure on the street” and that bicyclists who want to turn right onto First Avenue from 14th Street must cross four lanes of traffic, with the current street design. “Simple, but effective infrastructure solutions like turn calming, signal re-timing and more bike infrastructure can transform a deadly intersection into a safe one, here and across the neighborhood,” the group said.

What to Do After a Bicycle Accident

The first step that a victim should take is seek medical attention. Please remember to follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations and keep records of medical visits, bills, and treatment. Immediately after your injury accident, if you are able, move to a safe location and call the police. A police report can provide an important record of what happened. Exchange contact and insurance information with the driver involved, and avoid arguing or admitting fault at the scene.

Document the accident as thoroughly as possible. Take photographs of your bicycle, injuries, the vehicle, road conditions, traffic signs and surrounding area. Gather contact information from witnesses and preserve any relevant videos or other evidence. You should also notify your insurance company, but do not give any statements or sign documents before talking to your attorney. Contact a personal injury attorney who can review the circumstances of your accident, explore potential sources of compensation and help you understand the legal process.

It is in the best interest of injured victims and their families in such cases to contact a very experienced personal injury lawyer before contacting the people responsible for the injuries, and definitely before contacting or communicating with any insurance company, or their lawyers, investigators, or adjusters.
