Taxicab Jumps Manhattan Sidewalk Injuring Six People

An out-of-control SUV taxicab crashed into a Manhattan café after going over a sidewalk on June 20 injuring six tourists, three of them critically. According to the New York Post, the major injury car accident occurred near the intersection of Broadway and 29th Street, about four blocks south of the Empire State Building. Some of the victims were dining outdoors when they were struck. A group of bystanders rushed to rescue two of the tourists who were trapped under the vehicle and lifted the 4,500-pound SUV to help free them, the news article stated.

Severe Injuries Reported

A surveillance video shows that the driver of the medallion taxicab, after initially colliding with a bicyclist and slowing down, jumps the curb before striking two women on the sidewalk and pinning them against a wall. About 15 to 20 New Yorkers attempted to lift the taxicab off the injured women and succeeded, police said. The driver remained at the scene.

One construction worker who was on the job nearby said one of the victims lost a leg below the knee and the ankle of her other leg was mangled. The second woman was missing the majority of one of her thighs, he said. The heroic bystanders freed the women from under the car before first responders even arrived at the scene, video shows. The driver was in complete shock just sitting in his seat, witnesses said.

Three of those injured were in critical condition and three others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Firefighters and emergency personnel treated the victims at the scene and rushed them to a local hospital. Mayor Eric Adams said the people who were struck were tourists.

The Post reports that the same taxicab was caught speeding through a red light in December 2021, according to howsmydriving.nyc, but it is not clear if the same driver committed that traffic infraction. The investigation is ongoing. It is not yet clear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the victims. These types of accidents, sadly, have the potential to cause significant injuries and damages and leave victims suffering from permanent disabilities.

Compensation for Injuries

Injured victims of car accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
