Staten Island is Borough with Highest Number of Dog Bites

New city data shows that Staten Island accounted for more dog bites per capita compared to other city boroughs. According to a report in the New York Post, the most recent data from the Health Department indicates that dogs bit roughly 62 people out of every 100,000 on Staten Island in 2014. Staten Islanders were rushed to emergency rooms after dog bites at more than twice the rate in Manhattan.
Here are other interesting Staten Island data with regard to dogs and dog attacks. Staten Island has the highest estimated percentage of the population owning one or more dogs at about 32 percent. According to the Department of Health and Human Hygiene, this may be because of the density and type of housing on Staten Island where residents have more yard space for pets.

Dog Bite Report
Overall, the city saw 6,373 emergency room visits for dog bites in 2014, up 12 percent from 2007. Of those cases, 293 required hospitalization. Victims of dog attacks also sustained financial losses with the average cost of a dog bite ER visit in 2014 hitting $2,379, up from $1,503 in 2007. The report notes that these injuries are “largely preventable” and have significant public health impacts related to physical trauma, infections and psychological effects.
New Yorkers reported 3,088 dog bites to the 311-line last year, down from 3,188 in 2014. The study also said children are more likely to require emergency room treatment as a result of dog attacks. In 2014, the reported dog bite rate was 1.5 times greater among kids under the age 17 compared to adults. About 34 percent of the injuries happened during the summer months with June being the peak dog bite month.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, dog bites and other dog-related injuries accounted for more than one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claim dollars paid out in 2016, costing more than $600 million. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 4.5 million dog bites occur each year in the United States. In 2015, more than 28,000 people underwent reconstructive surgery as a result of being bitten by dogs. The average cost of a dog bite-related hospital stay was $18,200, about 50 percent higher than the average injury-related hospital stay.
If You Have Been Bitten
If a dog has bitten you, the first step to take is to get prompt medical attention. File a report with your local law enforcement agency or animal control agency, and obtain a copy of this report for your own records. Your dog bite attorney can help you secure this information as well.
Try to get contact information (such as email, phone number and address) for the dogs’ owner and anyone else who may have witnessed the dog attack. Get as many photographs from the scene as possible. Preserve all physical evidence from the scene including torn and bloody clothing. Contact an experienced personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that your legal rights and best interests are protected.
Dog Bites and Liability Issues
Victims of dog bites tend to suffer serious injuries from lacerations, puncture wounds and bite marks to broken bones and nerve damage. Depending on the facts and circumstances of the case, New York statutes hold dog owners financially responsible for the injuries and damages caused by pets. This is especially true in cases where the dog owner knew or should have known that the dog was likely to attack or in cases where the dog owner did little or nothing to prevent the attack from happening.
In some cases, victims may also be able to file a premises liability claim against the owner of the property and/or property manager where the attack occurred. Injured dog bite victims can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
