Speeding Car Injures Two People in Brooklyn

Two people were transported to hospital emergency rooms with serious injuries after a car accident, which officials say was caused by a speeding driver. According to Streetsblog.com, NYPD officials said the driver of an SUV was traveling at a “high rate of speed” down Ocean Parkway when he or she crashed into a second vehicle that was eastbound on Avenue U. After the initial collision, the SUV flipped several times and hit two other vehicles before finally stopping. The impact of the chain reaction crash was so great that one of the vehicles ended up striking a fifth vehicle, based on the report.

Paramedics took the driver of the SUV and a 33-year-old driver of another vehicle to area hospitals. Streetsblog.com reports that at least half a dozen emergency personnel were already near the accident site to combat the surging COVID-19 cases in New York City. Police have not made any arrests or issued any summonses, but have said that the crash is under investigation.

Empty Streets and Speeding Vehicles

This crash urged New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to issue a statement to Streetsblog.com saying the last thing the city needs now is additional crash victims who take up more beds at hospitals, which are already overwhelmed by coronavirus patients. He said, even though, the streets are emptier now because of the coronavirus lockdown, it is important for the public to slow down and “not act like…it’s an open season if you want to speed.”

He has vowed that the NYPD will step up enforcement on the street to catch speeding drivers. According to Streetsblog.com, New York City’s speed cameras issued 83,478 violations in an eight-day period in March, which is only 8 percent fewer than a similar eight-day period in January, when there were hundreds of thousands more vehicles on city streets.

Speed-related Crashes

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), more than 9,000 deaths or 26 percent of all car accident fatalities, occurred in speed-related crashes in 2018. High speeds increase the risk of a crash since it takes longer for vehicles to stop or slow down. Speed-related collisions tend to result in fatalities due to the heightened impact.

Speed is a major factor on the number of crashes and the severity of injuries. It influences the risk of crashes and crash injuries in three fundamental ways. First, it increases the distance a vehicle travels from the time a driver detects an emergency to the time a driver reacts. Second, it increases the distance needed to stop a vehicle once the driver begins to brake, and it increases the likelihood of the driver losing control of the vehicle. Finally, the impact of a high-speed crash can be devastating, and often deadly.

The IIHS found that with regard to enforcement methods, speed cameras are effective and stand apart because they don’t require the presence of an officer. By deploying cameras, communities are able to enforce speed limits much more consistently than they can using traditional enforcement. Speed cameras have helped reduce the number of crashes, especially in school zones.
