Four people were injured in a chain-reaction car accident in Brooklyn after two vehicles were involved in a collision. According to a CBS New York news report, police say a white vehicle and red vehicle crashed at the intersection of 54th Street and Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park. Witnesses told CBS2 that one of the victims was thrown into the air by the impact.
One witness said the driver of the red car was speeding down the street when the accident happened. A girl who was crossing the street fell on the ground. Some witnesses said the driver of the red car might have run the red light at the intersection. Four people were injured including one pedestrian and three others in the vehicles. All of the injured victims are expected to survive. According to the New York City Department of Transportation, there were 16,954 car accidents in August 2019 in which 21 people were killed.
Steps to Take After a Car Accident
If you have been injured in a car accident, there are a number of steps that you would be well advised to take in order to protect your legal rights. First and foremost, it is important that you file a police report, which may contain crucial details such as when and where the accident occurred and who caused it. A police report is typically filed within a few days of the incident at the local police department. Your car accident lawyer will be able to obtain this report for you.
Next, it is critical that you get the medical attention, care and treatment you need for your injuries. Do not decline treatment at the scene. If you need to get to an emergency department right away, please make sure you get there. Follow up with your hospital or doctor regarding treatment and care for your injuries. When you get prompt medical attention, you not only give yourself the best chance at a speedy and full recovery, but you also create documentation showing the type of injury you sustained and the treatment you received for it.
Collect as much evidence as possible from the scene of the crash. This might include photographs, video footage, contact information for other people involved in the crash, contact information for anyone who saw the accident take place, etc. Please be sure to save all receipts and invoices relating to the incident. It would be in your best interest to contact an experienced New York car accident lawyer who will help you gather and compile information and evidence needed to substantiate your personal injury claim.
Compensation for Your Injuries
Victims who have been injured in New York City car accidents may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
Families of deceased pedestrian accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as lost future income, funeral costs, medical expenses, pain and suffering, etc. Pedestrian accidents often result in major or catastrophic injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal organ damage, etc.
