A 10-year-old boy was killed in a Queens pedestrian accident after he was struck by a New York City Department of Sanitation truck while crossing the street with his mother. According to a report on Gothamist.com, the incident occurred at the corner of 57th Avenue and 97th Street when the driver pulling out of a driveway on 97th Street to turn right onto 57th Avenue hit the mother and son with the passenger-side wheel of the sanitation dump truck. While the boy suffered fatal injuries, his mother sustained serious leg injuries, the report says.
An NYPD spokesperson said there has been no summonses or charges made against the driver and the investigation is active. The Department of Sanitation is also conducting an investigation. The truck driver has been suspended from driving and placed on modified duty. He may be disciplined pending the findings of the investigation, city officials stated. Neighbors said the family of the boy who died in this fatal pedestrian accident were members of the Nepalese community. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of this child, and we wish his injured mother a speedy and complete recovery.
Neighbors also said that the driveway that the truck was exiting is lined with fencing and leads to a sidewalk before drivers can turn. They also said there is no proper signage at the driveway to warn drivers or pedestrians to use caution. Local council members have also asked the NYC Department of Transportation for better lighting along the avenue, a concern that has been raised by neighbors as well. They are also asking for more time for pedestrians to cross the street compared to the 15-second crossing time. Council members say it may also help to have additional crossing guards in the area, which has two schools nearby.
Drivers operating large vehicles such as dump trucks and sanitation trucks must be vigilant, especially due to the fact that these vehicles tend to have blind spots. These types of pedestrian accidents turn people’s lives upside down. Large truck drivers need to receive proper training and instruction. They need to take precautions especially when they back up these vehicles. In such cases, it may be necessary to have another person look out for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians as the truck is backing out, and the truck should sound an alarm when it is backing up.
