A bicyclist and a moped rider were critically injured in separate crashes in Brooklyn and Manhattan within nine hours, police said on May 8. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the first crash occurred the night of May 7 when a 32-year-old man operating a moped west on Highland Boulevard outside of Highland Park crashed into a vehicle making a left turn from Highland Boulevard onto Vermont Place. The victim was thrown from the moped and landed on the asphalt. Medics rushed him to Brookdale Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The 47-year-old driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene.
On May 8, a Citi Bike rider was struck by a bus on 12th Avenue near West 41st Street in Manhattan. Emergency personnel rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital where he remained in critical condition. The 62-year-old bus driver remained at the scene. No criminal charges were filed in either case.
Critical Injuries Suffered in Bicycle Accidents
Bicycle accidents tend to result in severe and life-changing injuries because bicyclists have little physical protection compared to occupants of motor vehicles. Critical injuries commonly include traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord damage, fractures, internal bleeding and severe road rash. Head injuries are especially dangerous and may occur even when a cyclist wears a helmet, potentially leading to memory loss, cognitive impairment or permanent disability. Spinal cord injuries can result in partial or complete paralysis, dramatically affecting a victim’s quality of life and ability to work.
Broken bones frequently occur in the arms, legs, ribs and pelvis due to the force of impact during a collision. Internal injuries, such as organ damage or internal bleeding, may not be immediately visible but can become fatal without prompt medical treatment. Many victims also suffer emotional trauma, including anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder following the accident. Because these injuries often require extensive medical care and rehabilitation, bicycle accident victims may face significant financial, physical and emotional challenges long after the incident.
What is the Potential Value of a Bicycle Accident Case?
The value of a bicycle accident case typically depends on the nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the victim as well as the extent of negligence (carelessness) on the part of the driver. In such cases, negligent (careless) motorists or passengers can be held responsible for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitative treatment, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
In cases of serious injury, the victim may be entitled to compensation for future medical care, future pain and suffering and also for permanent injuries, and a loss of earning capacity if the injuries prevent them from returning to work. Pain and suffering, emotional distress, and diminished quality of life, etc. can also be factors in calculating compensation. Families of deceased victims can also seek compensation for their losses by filing a wrongful death claim.
