A woman was killed and three other people were injured in a car accident in eastern Queens. According to a CBS New York news report, the incident occurred at the intersection of Grand Central Parkway Service Road and 164th Street after a car was struck by an SUV, which was traveling west on Grand Central Parkway. The car was being driven by a 51-year-old man who had two female passengers whose ages were 48 and 59 respectively.
The younger woman was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. The older woman suffered a shoulder injury while the driver sustained an injury to his chest. Both survivors are said to be in stable condition. The driver of the SUV, a 36-year-old woman, was transported to a hospital with neck and back injuries, but she is expected to survive. NYPD’s Highway Collision Squad is investigating this car accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased woman and with the injured victims of this crash.
Street Intersection Crashes
This two-car collision reportedly occurred at a Queens street intersection. Such types of crashes that occur at intersections often result in major injuries and/or fatalities to the victims involved. Here are some of the most common reasons why street intersection accidents happen:
• Running red lights or stop signs: When drivers fail to pay attention to a traffic light or stop sign or when they deliberately run a red light or stop sign at a street intersection, the consequences can be devastating.
• Unsafe turns: A number of accidents occur when vehicles are turning right or left, or when they are making U-turns at street intersections. Such accidents are usually caused by driver negligence such as traveling too fast, inattention, driver distraction, poor visibility and weather conditions, etc. A number of times, drivers deliberately violate the rules of the road by running a red light or not stopping at a stoplight.
• Right-of-way issues: Drivers approaching intersections are required to yield the right of way to oncoming vehicles, be they cars, motorcycles or bicyclists. In addition, drivers are required to stop and yield to pedestrians at intersections.
A street intersection crash may be a rear-end crash, a head-on car accident or a broadside collision. Any of these types of accidents can lead to catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Some of the common injuries sustained in auto accidents include, but are not limited to, head injuries, neck and back injuries, broken bones, internal organ damage, etc.
Steps to Take After a Crash
If you have been injured in a car accident, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your legal rights. First, report the crash to the police, file a report and get a copy of the report for your own records. Get prompt medical attention for your injuries. Obtain as much evidence as possible from the scene including photos of the vehicles involved in the crash, injuries suffered by various parties, contact information for those involved as well as for eyewitnesses. Also, obtain other pertinent information from those involved in the accident such as driver’s license, vehicle license plate number, insurance information, etc. If you are injured and unable to get evidence and information from the accident scene, have a family member, friend or your personal injury lawyer do that for you.
