Jiayi Zheng, 28, a nurse who had just completed an overnight shift, was killed in a pedestrian accident involving a hit-and-run driver the morning of Aug. 29. According to a WABC news report, Zheng was struck at the intersection of 55th Street and Third Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Investigators said a black Cadillac traveling south on Third Avenue hit her as she crossed the street. Zheng suffered severe body trauma and was transported to NYU Langone Hospital, where she died from her injuries. The driver fled the scene and remained at large. Ongoing Traffic Safety Issues in the Sunset Park Area
Police said a video captured the vehicle speeding south on the street before the collision. The video also shows the vehicle plowing into the victim and tossing her several feet, the ABC report said. Customers inside a nearby deli rushed out to help the nurse, officials said.
This fatal crash has renewed calls for safety improvements along the stretch of Third Avenue, which has seen multiple deadly crashes over the years. The safety advocacy group, Transportation Alternatives, noted that Zheng’s death marks the 11th fatality involving a pedestrian or bicyclist on the two-mile section of Third Avenue under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, since 2014. The group also said six pedestrians and five bicyclists have been killed along the corridor during that time period.
Advocates said another nurse at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn was killed in 2020 while biking home from an overnight shift near Third Avenue and 56th Street, just blocks from where Zheng was fatally struck. Advocates also said that a 2023 city proposal to redesign the` two-mile section has yet to be implemented, calling for officials to speed up those much-needed improvements. This deadly crash also comes during a fortnight when nine people have been killed in hit-and-run crashes across the city.
