New York Motorcyclist Injured by Roadway Debris

According to a news report in The Post-Standard, the serious injury accident occurred on Interstate 81 in Parish. The motorcycle rider swerved to avoid a two-by-four piece of wood on the road and lost control of his motorcycle. He suffered serious injuries. But, officials say, he is expected to survive. It is unclear how long the debris had remained on the roadway, or if the authorities have identified the driver responsible for dumping the debris.
According to the 2009 Summary of Motorcycle Accidents released by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, 155 people were killed and 5,042 were injured in New York motorcycle accidents. About 44 percent of the New York motorcycle accidents were single-vehicle crashes and 52.2 percent involved a collision with one or more vehicles. Also, 3.2 percent of New York motorcycle accidents that year involved an obstruction or debris on the roadway.
