Mayor Zohran Mamdani has signed an executive order requiring city’s non-emergency trucks to be fitted with devices that warn pedestrians of their presence while making turns. According to an AMNY.com news report, all new vehicles the city acquires will also be equipped with speed limiters with technology capping the vehicle’s top speeds.
What the Executive Order Means
Mamdani signed the action, which requires that the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) add the pedestrian alert devices to the 4,000 city fleet trucks it manages by June 2029. The technology connects to vehicles’ turn signals and sounds an alarm to warn pedestrians and bicyclists when they are turning at a corner or intersection.
The order also requires the agency to make sure that when purchasing new non-emergency municipal cars and trucks, they are fitted with intelligent speed-limiting devices, which prevent vehicles from exceeding the speed limit that’s been set. These devices are also designed to protect pedestrians, bicyclists and other road users from speeding drivers. DCAS manages the largest city vehicle fleet that has speed-limiting devices in the country, Mamdani’s office has said.
The city has installed the devices on 1,000 of its vehicles, which represent 23 distinct vehicle classes used by 21 different city agencies. Also, with the passage of Stop Super Speeders Act in this year’s state budget, private vehicle drivers who rack up at least 16 school-zone speed-camera tickets within a 12-month period, can be ordered by a judge to have a speed limiter installed in their vehicle.
