New York Assemblyman Urges Baby Food Makers to Place Lead Warning Labels

childleadNew York Assemblyman Felix Ortiz has said he would like manufacturers of juices and baby foods to warn consumers about high levels of lead in the food, which pose a serious risk of lead poisoning among young children. According to a news report in The Post Star News, Ortiz said that the food industry, including companies such as Dole, Gerber, Del Monte and Beech Nut, must take action by taking steps to better inform their consumers and make the changes necessary to ensure that their products are lead-free. As Ortiz states, even low lead levels ingested by young children can result in serious health effects. He says that in 2011, there were 1,183 cases of lead poisoning in New York City alone.
Effects of Lead Poisoning in Children
Lead poisoning can have devastating effects on the growth and development of young children. It can cause irreversible damage to vital organs such as the brain and kidneys. High levels of lead in the blood can cause coma, convulsions and even death. Even when children ingest lower levels of lead they suffer serious effects such as reduced intelligence or IQ levels, hearing impairment, learning disabilities and behavioral issues.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 38 young children in the United States have unacceptable levels of blood in their systems. CDC last year lowered the threshold for lead poisoning from 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood to 5 micrograms. After this change in the standard, more than half a million children in the United States are believed to have lead poisoning.
Compensation for Lead Poisoning Victims
If your child has been affected by lead poisoning as the result of a negligent property owner or the manufacturer of a defective product, the experienced New York personal injury lawyers with the Law Offices of Kenneth A. Wilhelm can help you better understand your legal rights and options. Our firm recovered $1,162,500 for a child who suffered lead poisoning from paint in her apartment. The child’s injuries were subtle and difficult to recognize. We recovered $162,500 above the $1 million dollar total policy in this case. Despite the judge’s efforts to settle the case for $950,000, we fought hard and recovered $162,500 more than the insurance full policy of one million dollars.
