New Interactive Tool Maps Every Traffic Injury and Fatality in New York City

nypedestrians New York City officials have announced a new interactive component to the city’s Vision Zero web site, which showcases Mayor Bill de Blasio’s year-old program that aims to reduce traffic accident deaths to zero. According to a report, Vision Zero was actually a concept that was pioneered in Sweden and adopted earlier this year as New York City policy. It basically redesigns city streets and traffic patterns with the aim of bringing down or eliminating traffic fatalities.

New Interactive Web Tool
City officials recently unveiled the interactive web tool that will map every traffic injury and fatality in the city and assist the effort to redesign streets for safety. The web tool visualized the most dangerous streets and intersections for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers citywide. The site features four different methods to visually track Vision Zero’s progress. The map can be viewed from the perspective of traffic accidents, street design, outreach efforts and the rate of deaths and injuries in precincts and community districts based on size and population. Under each category, visitors can filter data by boroughs. Visitors to the site can also compare statistics for different months and years between 2009 and 2014.
Just by using this tool, you can tell that downtown Brooklyn and midtown Manhattan are hot zones for pedestrian accident fatalities and injuries. The map also highlights a serious situation for pedestrian safety in the city especially at intersections with north-south running avenues in Manhattan. Injuries are there in all boroughs, especially in locations where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic.
