Motorcycle Accident Statistics
According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, 148 people died and 4,633 were injured in 2014 as a result of motorcycle accidents statewide. There were 4,357 motorcycle accidents that year of which 778 involved failure to yield the right of way on the part of the motorist. Other common causes of motorcycle accidents in 2014 included aggressive driving, alcohol involvement, driver distraction and following too closely.
Statistics from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that 4,976 people died in motorcycle accidents nationwide in 2015, which was up 8.3 percent from 4,954 in 2014. Motorcyclists were estimated to be 27 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled, and almost five times more likely to be injured in 2014. Also in 2014, there were about 8.4 million motorcycles on the nation’s roadways.
Left-Turn Motorcycle Accidents
Based on the Patch.com news report, this recent Bay Shore motorcycle accident occurred when the motorist was attempting a left turn and ended up striking the oncoming motorcyclist. In such cases, it is crucial to determine who had the right of way. Drivers turning left in front of an oncoming motorcyclist are a major cause of serious injury or fatal motorcycle accidents.
The Hurt Report, which was commissioned by NHTSA made the finding that the most common motorcycle accident is one where another vehicle has violated the motorcyclist’s right of way at an intersection by turning left in front of the oncoming motorcyclist. The most common excuse drivers make in such cases is that they didn’t see the oncoming motorcycle. The Hurt Report also said that some single-vehicle motorcycle accidents are caused by a motorcyclist making an evasive maneuver to avoid colliding with a car that turned left in front of the motorcyclist.
Injuries and Damages
Motorcycle accidents often result in serious if not catastrophic or fatal injuries. The most common injury sustained in motorcycle accidents is a traumatic brain injury, which may permanently impair the brain and lead to lifelong disabilities. Brain injuries can affect a range of bodily functions from memory and speed to balance, coordination and behavior. A motorcycle rider or passenger may also suffer neck and spinal injuries, which may have consequences as serious as paralysis or death. Even less serious injuries may result in chronic pain and permanent disabilities. Other types of injuries from motorcycle accidents include broken bones, facial injuries, road rash, damage to muscles, nerves and ligaments, and an injury known as Biker’s Arm, which is basically nerve damage that occurs when a rider extends his or her arms for protection during a fall.
Injured victims of motorcycle accidents can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families of deceased victims can also seek compensation by filing a wrongful death claim.
