A boat captain was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment after a boat he was operating overturned in New York Harbor the night of Aug. 8, killing 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter Antonella Garcia. According to a report in The New York Times, the fatal boating accident occurred near Liberty Island in Upper New York Bay. Manuel Hernandez, 46, the boat’s captain, was arrested and charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment.
Ongoing Investigation
An air-and-sea helicopter rescue unit found Sara Sanchez and her baby in the water in critical condition. Police transported the victims to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead. Officials said 12 others were rescued from the bay before the police arrived. They were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard is working with the NYPD to determine whether the incident involved an illegal charter operation.
Officials define an illegal charter as a recreational or for-hire vessel that lacks Coast Guard credentials, safety equipment or a certificate of inspection. The Times reports that this fatal incident echoed a similar boating accident in the summer of 2022 when a 27-foot boat capsized in the Hudson River near Midtown Manhattan, leaving two people dead including a 7-year-old boy.
