Manhattan Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Accident Caught on Camera

A 60-year-old New York City man who was pinned by an SUV that swerved off the roadway in Upper Manhattan is expected to lose his leg after bearing the impact of this pedestrian accident. According to an NBC New York news report, one of the man’s legs is being held together by rods and screws while the other has been shattered due to a collision with a vehicle that veered onto the sidewalk at 135th Street and Broadway in Harlem.

The SUV had crashed with another vehicle and the impact from the crash sent it barreling into a group of pedestrians. NBC reports that the victim saw the car coming, warned another pedestrian and possibly even saved that man’s life. The entire ordeal was captured on surveillance video, which showed that the victim was unable to get out of the vehicle’s way in time.

The man’s partner, who also witnessed the terrifying crash, said she was just feet away from him and thought he was going to die. The man told NBC that he was in terrible pain after being pinned between the bodega and the SUV, and could see “bone coming out of his leg.” Doctors have now told him his leg must be amputated from the knee down. Meanwhile, police are still investigating who is responsible for the collision that sent the SUV into the victim and the bodega. So far, they have not made any arrests or issued any summonses.

Accidents on Busy Streets

These types of accidents that injure pedestrians on sidewalks are sadly common in New York City. In this particular case, the SUV was struck by another vehicle at a street intersection, and the impact from that collision pushed the SUV into a group of pedestrians. In such cases, it is important to look into which driver’s negligence (carelessness) – or if both drivers’ negligence – caused the pedestrian accident.

In such cases, typically, motorists may have been speeding through intersections or may have failed to yield the right of way to another vehicle, leading to a street intersection collision. In crowded New York City intersections, pedestrians often get struck in a secondary collision by a vehicle involved in the earlier crash that leaves the roadway, as it occurred in this Upper Manhattan incident.
