Hit and run car accidentA 29-year-old man was killed after a hit-and-run accident in the New Brighton area of Staten Island on New Year’s Day. The Staten Island Advance reports that the fatal collision occurred in front of 124 Lafayette Ave. and two vehicles were involved in the crash. The victim was driving one vehicle and was pinned inside it in the impact. Firefighters had to extricate him from the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle reportedly fled on foot.

Hit-and-Run Statistics
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of fatal hit-and-run crashes is trending upward, from 1,274 in 2009 to 1,393 in 2010 to 1,449 in 2011, the most recent year for which these statistics are available. Most significantly, the 13.7 percent increase in hit-and-run deaths over that three-year period occurred while traffic accident deaths overall were falling 4.5 percent, from 33,883 in 2009 to 32,367 in 2011.
Protecting Victims’ Rights
Often, hit-and-run victims and their families are left with expenses such as medical bills and funeral costs. When the hit-and-run driver is not found, victims may be able to seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of their own auto insurance policies or through a quasi-state agency. If the driver has been apprehended, then he or she can be held liable for the victim’s losses as well.
