School Bus AccidentA man was fatally injured in a bus accident after a school bus struck and killed him in the Bronx. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the 57-year-old man was crossing Broadway, when a 12-seat Reliant Transportation bus, which was not carrying any passengers, struck him while making a right turn. Police said the victim had the green light as he was crossing the street. Witnesses said the bus hit him and dragged him down the street. Police said there were no children on the bus. The bus driver was overheard telling someone on the phone that it was too dark and he did not see the man crossing. Police are investigating the incident.
According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), 16,357 pedestrians were struck by vehicles in 2010, and of those, 311 died. The New York Department of Transportation (DOT) reported that in 2010, nearly 80 percent of all pedestrian accidents involved private vehicles, while the remaining 20 percent involved taxicabs, buses, and commercial trucks.
Bus drivers and their employers are not only responsible for safely transporting their passengers, but are also required to be constantly aware of their surroundings, including pedestrians, bicycles, and other vehicles that may be on the roadway. Mass carriers – both public and private – are required to make sure that their bus drivers exercise due care and caution. They have a responsibility to hire drivers who are healthy and have a safe driving record. If it is found that a driver or an employer was negligent, they may be held liable for any injuries or damages. Even if no criminal charges are filed against a driver or the company, victims of these accidents may be able to pursue a civil case.
Pedestrians hit by a bus or other commercial vehicle are likely to suffer serious injuries including, but not limited to, brain damage, spinal injuries, broken bones, or even death.
