Pedestrian accidentInjuries to bicyclists and pedestrians have escalated during the first six months of this year compared to the same period in 2012. According to statistics released by the New York Police Department, as of the end of May, 64 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed by city motorists and 6,169 were injured, compared to 66 deaths and 6,040 injuries for the same period in 2012. Citywide, at least six pedestrians and two cyclists were killed by drivers including two pedestrians in the Bronx; one pedestrian and two cyclists in Brooklyn; and three pedestrians in Queens. At least four of eight pedestrians and cyclists reported killed by motorists in May were seniors over 70 years of age.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Statistics
Streetsblog.org reports that across the city, 981 pedestrians and 395 bicyclists were injured in crashes with motorcyclists and per NYPD policy trained officers investigated few of these collisions. Streetsblog determined by analyzing these reports that no motorists were known to have been charged for causing a death and that nearly half the motorists who kill a pedestrian or bicyclist in New York City do not receive so much as a citation for careless driving.
Pedestrian and bicycle accidents tend to result in major injuries. Pedestrians and bicyclists have very little to protect them as opposed to occupants of other passenger vehicles. Bicyclists often have only a helmet. In many collisions, even a helmet is not sufficient to protect them. Bicycle and pedestrian collisions can cause brain damage, spinal cord trauma, broken bones and internal injuries. Injured victims who have suffered losses as a result of someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing can file a personal injury lawsuit to seek compensation.
