Amira Aminova, a 11-year-old girl, was killed after she was struck by a school bus while crossing the street in Brooklyn. According to a report in The New York Times, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred the afternoon of Feb. 5 when the girl who had been waiting at the edge of a busy intersection in the Bath Beach neighborhood started going across the crosswalk when a walk sign turned into a flashing red hand with a countdown timer.
Ongoing Investigation
The bus driver, who was making a right turn did not yield to the girl who was crossing the street and ended up striking her, the Times reports based on surveillance video of this fatal pedestrian accident. Amira was less than 200 feet away from her home, police said. The driver of the school bus, identified as 62-year-old Wawa Aurelus, was accused of leaving the scene after the collision.
He faces misdemeanor charges including failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. Police said the girl suffered severe injuries to her head and body. She was transported to Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park where she was pronounced dead. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of Amira Aminova for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. They will be in our prayers.
Child Traffic Deaths in NYC
Sadly, this tragic incident adds to the list of fatal collisions in city neighborhoods involving buses. Four years ago, a 15-year-old girl in the Midwood neighborhood in Brooklyn was killed after she was hit. That bus driver, who also fled the scene, told police he did not realize he had hit the girl. In 2020, a 10-year-old girl was killed in East New York, also in Brooklyn, while she was in the crosswalk and a bus driver made a right turn. Since 2014, when New York launched its Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities, at least 27 children have been killed while walking to or from school, according to data from Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group that tracks traffic deaths.
