Four shoppers were injured during a partial ceiling collapse at the City Fresh Market in Astoria, Queens. According to a report on QNS.com, the FDNY got the call the afternoon of Aug. 6 from the supermarket at 21-15 Broadway. Responding units found four shoppers were struck by a large section of plaster that fell from the ceiling inside the market. Firefighters found that a 20-foot-by-30-foot section of the plaster had fallen from the ceiling.
Injuries and Vacate Order
Emergency medical personnel transported two of the injured shoppers to Elmhurst Hospital where they were listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. Two other shoppers were also evaluated and released. The city’s Department of Buildings (DOB), the Department of Health and Con Edison were notified of the incident.
Due to the ceiling’s unsafe condition, DOB issued a vacate order for the entire supermarket. DOB also issued a violation to the building owner for failure to maintain the structure and ordered them to hire a professional engineer to submit a report to the DOB about the structural stability of the one-story building.
