A tour bus accident near Rochester, New York, proved fatal for one person and left 27 other victims injured the morning of Nov. 7. According to a report in The Democrat and Chronicle, the bus crash occurred on westbound Interstate 490 in Chili, New York, when the bus carrying 27 adults and one child overturned on the highway near Union Street. Monroe County Sheriff’s officials said a specific cause has not been determined for the crash.
Ongoing Bus Crash Investigation
In all, 28 people including the bus driver were taken to county hospitals. One passenger was critically injured, but that person died later from injuries sustained in the crash, the Finger Lakes Daily News reports. The community news outlet also reported that the bus driver was cited for fatigued driving, speeding, unsafe lane change and driving without a seatbelt.
The Democrat and Chronicle reported that the first deputies who arrived at the scene found the bus on its side, rotated 180 degrees, with two people still inside and numerous passengers walking along the highway “in a state of confusion,” according to officials. They said the bus was traveling to Niagara Falls and had just stopped to drop passengers in Rochester before the crash. The bus, operated by Tribal Sun Bus Company based in Massachusetts, left New York City around midnight and traveled northwest making stops along the Thruway that morning, officials said.
Earlier this year, on Jan. 5, a tour bus traveling through upstate New York from Montreal rolled over on Interstate 87 in Lake George killing one passenger and injuring 11 others. In September 2023, a bus carrying high school students from New York crashed on the Interstate 84, killing two people. An investigation into the cause of this deadly crash is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who were affected by this horrific bus accident.
What to Do If You’ve Been Injured in a Tour Bus Accident
If you’ve been injured in a tour bus crash, your first priority should be to seek medical attention. Prompt medical evaluation can help put you on the path to recovery and provide documentation of your injuries, which is crucial for a potential claim. After receiving medical care, gather as much information as possible about the accident, including the names of other passengers, the driver’s contact information, and any photos of the scene if possible.
Next, report the accident to the relevant authorities and contact a personal injury attorney. An attorney can help you navigate complex issues, such as determining liability as well as responsible parties, which may include the bus company, driver, or even third-party contractors. Your attorney can also handle all communication with insurance companies, ensuring that you are not pressured into settling for less than you deserve.
It is also important to keep records of any expenses or losses including medical bills, lost wages, and any other costs associated with the injury. Following these steps can help protect your rights and give you the best chance of receiving fair compensation for your injuries and losses.
Contacting an Experienced Lawyer
Injured victims of bus accidents may seek compensation from the bus company and/or other responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim. Bus accidents have the potential to cause severe or even catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, facial and eye injuries, etc.
