Fatal New York Truck Versus Van Accident

Two people were killed and five others were injured in a head-on crash on Route 32 near Falls Lane, New York. According to a News 12 report, officials said a box truck and a van collided during the morning rush-hour traffic on Nov. 10. State police identified the two deceased as 48-year-old Clive Booth of Goshen, the driver of the box truck and the van’s driver, Pedro Lorenzo Gutierrez-Lacon of Spring Valley. Authorities say the van was full of migrant construction workers and that five people suffered serious injuries.

News 12 talked to one neighbor who said the location where this head-on crash occurred is “a horrible stretch” where accidents are quite common. So far, officials have not determined who or what caused the crash. State police said troopers are still trying to identify the injured van passengers. Officials also said that the fatal crash is still under investigation. We offer our thoughts and prayers to the families of the deceased victims as well as those who have been seriously injured in this crash.

Common Causes of Head-On Collisions

As seen in this tragic incident, head-on collisions can lead to catastrophic or fatal injuries for victims. The injuries from these types of accidents can also result in permanent or lifelong disabilities. The factor that is most often responsible for a head-on collision is driver negligence (carelessness). Here are some of the most common causes of head-on crashes on New York’s roadways:

Distracted driving: Talking on a cell phone, texting or just engaging in any type of distracted activity while driving such as eating, drinking, adjusting the radio, etc., may result in a driver crossing over to opposing lanes of traffic and causing a head-on crash.

Driving while impaired: Some of the most devastating head-on collisions occur when an impaired motorists make mistakes. Being intoxicated by alcohol and/or drugs may result in impaired judgment and dulled abilities.

Wrong-way drivers: When a motorist fails to pay attention and drives the wrong way or does so because they are intoxicated, fatigued or simply driving recklessly, a head-on crash can occur.

Excessive speed: Exceeding the speed limit or driving at an unsafe speed given traffic, roadway and weather conditions, can also lead to catastrophic head-on collisions.

Dangerous driving: Drivers who pass vehicles in a dangerous manner in a no-pass zone or motorists who fail to yield the right of way to other vehicles also increase the risk of a head-on collision.
