Fatal Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident Involves Pickup Truck

A 69-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a pickup truck while walking home from the grocery store. According to a report in The New York Daily News, the grandmother of four was fatally struck at the corner of 85th Street and 16th Avenue in Bensonhurst the morning of Aug. 27.

Fatal Head Injury

Police said a 36-year-old Brooklyn man driving a pickup truck was making a left turn on to 16th Avenue off 85th Street when he struck the woman who was crossing the street. Emergency personnel took the victim to a local hospital with severe head trauma. She succumbed to her injuries.

The victim’s son said his mother immigrated to the country in 2002 and had been working in his grocery store in her retirement. He also told the Daily News that the pickup truck that collided with his mother was driving “much too fast.” The driver remained at the scene. Police have not made arrests or issued summonses as they continue their investigation into the crash. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of this victim for their tremendous loss.

Increase in Fatal Crashes

This is the second fatal Brooklyn pedestrian accident in just over one week. On the night of Aug. 24, a 6-year-old girl who was crossing the street in the Dyker Heights neighborhood was struck and killed. Police determined that the girl was crossing with the signal. The driver in that case was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment and failure to yield to a pedestrian and improper left turn on a one-way road.

Gothamist also recently reported that the number of fatal crashes in New York City is higher this year compared to the same time last year, according to NYPD’s statistics. This data shows that the number of deadly traffic accidents increased to 166 until Aug. 22, compared to 128 during the same time period last year, which is a 30% increase. According to Streetsblog, there were 140 fatal crashes in the same time period in 2019, representing 18% fewer fatal crashes compared to 2021. NYPD also said there were 78 pedestrian fatalities across the city so far this year compared to 51 during the same time period in 2020, which is a 50% increase.
