Fatal Brooklyn Bicycle Accident Involves Box Truck

A 37-year-old woman was killed in a Brooklyn bicycle accident after she was hit by a box truck at a street intersection. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the fatal crash occurred when the victim was riding a bicycle east on Ninth Street in Gowanus the morning of Jan. 10. She and the driver of the box truck had stopped at a red light at Second Avenue.

Two Major Bicycle Accidents in Brooklyn

When the light turned green and as both the bicyclist and the driver continued east, the woman was struck. Based on the news report, the victim was dragged to the pavement as her bicycle collided with the truck and she was run over by the larger vehicle’s rear tires. She died at the scene.

This was the second major bicycle accident within 24 hours in Brooklyn. About 12 hours before this crash, a 32-year-old e-bike rider was critically injured when he collided with a minivan near Union and South Second streets in Williamsburg. Emergency personnel rushed that bicyclist to an area hospital where officials said he was clinging to his life.

No charges were filed against the minivan driver or the driver of the truck here. In 2022, there were 17 fatal bicycle crashes in New York City — two fewer than 2021 — according to NYPD statistics. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who were affected by these two bicycle accidents. The accidents are under investigation.

Bicycle Accidents at Street Intersections

There are a number of factors that lead to a street intersection collision between cars and bicyclists. Many of these accidents tend to happen because of a driver who is negligent or careless behind the wheel. Often, bicyclists are hit by drivers who are distracted, speeding or fail to yield the right of way. Some drivers drift into bike lanes putting bicyclists in grave danger.

Such accidents can of course result in serious injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, etc. When a truck and a bicycle collide at an intersection, it is important to look into the factors that led to it including, who had the right of way at the intersection. Under New York law, bicyclists have the same rights as drivers of other vehicles.

In cases where negligence (carelessness) is involved, families of deceased bicycle accident victims can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering, and loss of love, care and companionship.

If you have been injured in a New York bicycle accident, you may be able to seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. An experienced New York personal injury lawyer will be able to guide victims’ families through the often complex legal process of recovering compensation.
