The number of Citi Bikes across all of New York City’s five boroughs is set to triple. Last week, Lyft, which purchased Citi Bikes, announced that it would make the bike system one of the largest in the world by pumping about $100 million into the project. This means doubling the service area and tripling the number of bikes to nearly 40,000, city officials said. In terms of location, officials say the stations will only go in neighborhoods that don’t already have Citi Bike.
Plan is Efficient, Officials Say
Lyft has stated that this expansion plan doesn’t necessarily mean more bike lanes and fewer parking spaces to make room for docking stations. A spokesperson for Lyft said they are plenty of side streets that can be safely used by bikers. Advocacy group Transportation Alternatives issued a statement saying each parking space that is turned into a Citi Bike rack will park eight bikes used on an avenue seven times a day, which is an efficient use of space.
More details are expected to be revealed in the coming months. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials have vowed to minimize the number of parking spaces that may be lost and say the DOT will work with local community boards to pinpoint the best locations for new docks.
If You Have Been Injured
The Citi Bike website advises anyone involved in a crash to call 911 and report the incident. They also require injured riders to report the incident within 24 hours of it occurring and notify their customer service department by calling 1-855-BIKE311. A representative will then provide you with a crash report.
Our bicycle accident lawyers recommend that you take the following steps after a Citi Bike crash:
• Get medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries.
• Call 911and report the crash to the police.
• Follow Citi Bike’s instructions, call them and report the crash as well.
• If you are physically able, collect as much information as possible from the crash site including photos and video of the site, the vehicles involved and any injuries that were sustained. Obtain contact information and insurance details for other parties that were involved and eyewitnesses. If you are injured and unable to collect information at the scene, ask a family member or friend if they can do it for you. Your personal injury lawyer can also help you obtain this information.
• Do not post any details or information regarding your accident on social media sites or online. Any photos, videos or comments you post online can be used against you and have the potential to jeopardize your claim.
