Elderly Woman Struck and Injured by MTA Bus in Coney Island

MTA Bus Accident LawyerA 70-year-old woman suffered a leg injury after she was hit by a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus. According to a Brooklyn News 12 report, the woman was walking at the intersection of Stillwell and Mermaid avenues the afternoon of April 11 when a B68 bus driven by a 45-year-old man traveling southbound on Stillwell and making a left onto Mermaid Avenue, collided with the pedestrian. The victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The driver of the bus remained at the scene. No arrests have been made pending an official investigation into this pedestrian accident.

Dangerous Coney Island Intersection

News 12 spoke with neighbors in the area who said they are concerned about pedestrian safety after this recent accident. Some said the area is a hub for public transportation and that the particular intersection where this pedestrian accident occurred is one of the busiest in the neighborhood. Data from the New York City Department of Transportation shows an unsafe pattern at the intersection.

This accident is now the ninth traffic-related injury to be recorded since the start of 2023. Representatives from Transportation Alternatives, a traffic safety advocacy group, said this intersection is a dangerous one and is in immediate need of safety improvements. The DOT and MTA have not yet commented. The investigation is ongoing.

Dangers Faced by Elderly Pedestrians in New York City

Senior pedestrians in New York City face various dangers due to the city’s bustling environment, heavy traffic, and complex infrastructure. With age, physical capabilities such as vision, hearing, and reaction time may decline, making it more challenging to navigate the city safely.

Factors contributing to the risks faced by senior pedestrians include:

  • Traffic Density: The high volume of vehicles and pedestrians in New York City can increase the likelihood of accidents, especially for seniors who may move more slowly or have difficulty judging the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles.
  • Crossing challenges: Complex intersections, fast-changing traffic signals, and longer crosswalks can be particularly challenging for seniors to navigate safely.
  • Lack of pedestrian infrastructure: Inadequate sidewalks, poorly maintained crosswalks, and insufficient pedestrian signage can further increase the risks for senior pedestrians.

To enhance the safety of senior pedestrians, New York City has implemented measures such as countdown pedestrian signals, pedestrian islands, and senior-friendly crosswalk designs.

Compensation for Victims

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
