A 49-year-old man was arrested and charged with DWI after a head-on car accident in Hampton Bays, New York, the night of May 26. According to a report on Patch.com, the two-car crash took place near East Montauk Highway and Bittersweet Avenue South. Southampton Town police responded and determined that one of the involved drivers was operating a vehicle while intoxicated and collided head on with the other vehicle causing damage to both vehicles and injuries to the other driver. That driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment, police said. The driver, Johany E. Ortiz-Valdez, was arrested and charged with two counts of DWI, misdemeanors as well as other traffic infractions, police said.
Impaired Driving and Head-on Collisions
Driving while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs (DWI) is one of the leading causes of head-on collisions. Alcohol and drug usage can impair a driver’s judgment, reaction time and coordination, making it difficult to stay in the correct lane or respond quickly to changing traffic conditions. Head-on collisions are also especially dangerous as the force of impact is doubled when two vehicles crash into each other from opposite directions.
These accidents often result in severe injuries, permanent disabilities or death. Many DWI-related crashes tend to occur at night or on weekends when impaired driving is more common. Victims of head-on collisions may suffer from broken bones, brain injuries, spinal damage and post-accident trauma, etc.
Stricter law enforcement, public awareness and responsible behavior from drivers can all help reduce the numbers of such accidents. Choosing not to drive after drinking, using designated drivers, or taking public transportation can also save lives and lower these types of head-on collisions.
Why Impaired Driving Amounts to Negligent (Careless) Driving
In a DWI collision, the negligence (carelessness) stems from the driver’s failure to exercise reasonable care while operating a vehicle. A driver who is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicating substances can have reduced concentration, slower reaction time and poor decision-making abilities. These impairments increase the risk of accidents and endanger the lives of passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
Negligent (careless) driving occurs when a person ignores traffic laws or drives carelessly without considering the safety of others. By choosing to drive while impaired, the driver knowingly places others at risk and fails to meet the standard of responsible driving as expected by law. Impaired drivers may speed, drift between lanes, ignore traffic signals, or fail to stop in time to avoid collisions, etc. Because of these dangerous actions, impaired driving can result in legal penalties, injuries, property damage, and even loss of life.
