Doctors Facing Disciplinary Action after Injuring Patients

Two doctors in Connecticut are facing disciplinary action after one was accused of puncturing a patient’s spleen and the other was accused of over-medicating patients and sexually violating them. According to the Hartford Courant, one doctor punctured a patient’s spleen in October 2010 and he sent her home. He never told the patient about the error and the patient came back to the emergency room several hours later and died.
The other doctor is accused of improperly prescribing opiates to at least four patients. Investigators say he did not examine the patients or determine a need for the drug. One woman accused the doctor of improperly touching her during an exam in 2008 and investigators also say he sent hundreds of phone calls and texts to a female patient, some that were sexually explicit. The doctor has been fined once in Oregon and denied a medical license in that state because he did not disclose he had been arrested.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), more than 225,000 people die every year because of medical errors. There are about 12,000 deaths a year because of unnecessary surgery, another 80,000 because of infections contracted in hospitals and about 7,000 because a medical professional made a medication error.
Medical malpractice can cover a myriad of errors made by medical professionals. Medical negligence may include mistakes in treatment, surgical procedures, improperly prescribing medication and failure to properly diagnose and treat a patient. Injuries sustained as a result of medical negligence may range from minor to life-changing. In some cases it can mean that the patient will have to undergo more unnecessary surgery to correct the error. In the worst cases, these errors could become fatal.
