Delivery Worker Killed in East Village Accident

A hit-and-run driver who may have been chased by police struck and killed a bicyclist in the East Village the night of July 8. According to a Streetsblog.org news report, the 24-year-old delivery worker was crossing East Houston Street from south to north on his e-bike near Clinton Street when the driver of a black SUV slammed into him causing severe body trauma.

The driver fled and was last seen heading north on FDR Drive, police said. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. Streetsblog.org posted the video of this fatal bicycle accident on its site clearly showing that the cyclist had the light and that the driver swerved around stopped traffic to run the red light and strike the bicyclist. After the crash, the driver is seen taking off at a high rate of speed as two police officers in an unmarked car pulled over to check on the victim.

Rise in Traffic Fatalities

NYPD is still looking into the circumstances of the chase and the fatal crash. The victim was a member of an undocumented workers’ rights group who recently won the Democratic primary to represent Park Slope in the City Council. This crash victim is the 14th bicyclist or e-bike rider killed in 2021. The Department of Transportation has begun classifying e-bike riders separately from bicyclists in a new category called “other motorized.”

This year New York is on pace for the most road deaths since Mayor Bill de Blasio’s term began in 2014. Through July 7, 128 people have died on city streets, up from 95 last year. Streetsblog.org describes the roadway of Houston Street as “a speedway in parts, thanks to two lanes of traffic for car drivers and a painted lane that is often filled with double-parked cars.
