Construction Machine A 20-year-old New Jersey worker was killed in a construction site accident when a piece of equipment fell on top of him. According to a WGAL news report, the accident happened at the Carriage Works Redevelopment project in West York, Pennsylvania. The worker was operating a Pettibone lift and it started to wobble back and forth. Officials said the wobbling might have been because of the wind. The lift started to tip over and the worker tried to get out of the way but didn’t make it in time. He was crushed and killed instantly. Officials are still working to learn the details of the accident.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are about 150,000 construction site accidents every year, nationwide, and nearly 1,000 construction workers die every year due to these accidents in the United States. Also, workers between ages 25 and 34 are most likely to be injured on the job. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), construction work has more deaths than any other industry in the United States.
Common injuries that occur on construction sites can include falls, building collapses, electric shock, and machinery malfunctions. Employers are expected to provide safe work environments for construction workers including providing all necessary equipment such as hard hats, harnesses, vests, and safety goggles. It is also the responsibility of the employer to make sure the building or work site meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
Injuries sustained at the workplace can range from minor to moderate to serious. In cases where workers are killed on the job, their families can seek workers compensation benefits from the employer. Those who were injured in a construction accident may be entitled to compensation by filing for workers compensation benefits to cover medical bills or a portion of lost wages. In addition, cases that involve third-party negligence can mean additional compensation for the victim if a civil lawsuit is filed. Third parties can include, but are not limited to, general contractors, sub-contractors, defective product manufacturers, and property owners. Our law firm recovered $3,375,576 for a construction worker who was injured on the job.
