A Pennsylvania-based iron foundry has been cited for multiple safety violations after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducted an investigation at their facility. According to a May 25, 2011 report by The OSHA, the foundry was cited for four repeat violations, nine serious violations and four non-serious violations. The foundry workers at this dangerous site were vulnerable to hazards that had the potential to cause serious injury or even death. The dangerous conditions include a lack of guardrails on elevated platforms, lack of safety devices, a lack of training, and open pits. The violations resulted in a total penalty of $44,300.
OSHA does its part to monitor potentially dangerous work places, but it is impossible for the government to protect all workers and ensure compliance at every work facility. It is the responsibility of all employers and property owners to provide safe workplaces. Workers must be provided safe conditions, the necessary training, and proper safety devices such as handrails, hardhats and warning signs. A majority of catastrophic workplace accidents can be prevented or avoided if only employers adhered to federal and safety standards.
The 2009 Census of Fatal occupational Injuries Summary reported 4,340 fatal work injuries throughout the United States. The report goes on to state that construction continues to be the industry that has the most fatal work injuries. Construction accidents that may lead to fatal injuries include falling, explosions, cave-ins, trench accidents, crane collapses and equipment failure. An employee who is injured on-the-job can seek compensation for damages, specifically medical expenses, cost of rehabilitation such as physical therapy, lost earnings, damages for pain and suffering and permanent injuries.
