An 18-year-old college student wasIce Road Accident killed in a car accident after the vehicle  in which she was passenger hit a patch of black ice and flipped over while heading to Buffalo. According to The Gant Daily, the teen, who is from Huntington, New York, was thrown from the vehicle and fatally injured. She was a part of a group from her sorority at Penn State that was on a campaign to solicit donations for canned food. Officials say icy roads caused this crash.
According to the New York Department of Transportation (DOT), there are about 1.5 million weather-related accidents a year. About 7,100 people are killed and more than 629,000 injured in weather-related accidents every year. Nearly 900 people a year are killed in accidents that are caused by snow or sleet on the roads.
Road conditions can play a vital role in driver safety. Poorly-maintained roads can be a hazard. If roads are slick from rain or slippery from snow, drivers may lose control of their vehicles and crash. Black ice can be among the deadliest of hazards because drivers cannot see it. Therefore, it can be extremely difficult to avoid the slippery patches. Injuries from these types of crashes can be catastrophic or even fatal.
Government agencies that maintain the roads, freeways, or expressways are responsible for their upkeep and ensuring they are safe for travel. This includes repairing any potholes and clearing the roads of ice after a snowstorm. Other factors that can play a role in automobile accidents include driver negligence, auto defects and mechanical malfunctions, etc.
The family of a fatal collision accident victim is faced with having to endure a lifetime of pain and suffering. Family members who have lost a loved one because of a negligent driver may be able to file a wrongful death claim seeking damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income and benefits, etc.
