carcrashTwo brothers, 18 and 19 years of age, suffered major injuries in a car accident in Commack, New York. According to a news report in The Commack Patch, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of Motor Parkway and Moreland Road where the traffic light was not working due to the storm. The accident occurred when the 18-year-old female driver of a 1994 Plymouth Voyager, heading north on Moreland, collided with a 1983 Cadillac that was traveling west on Motor Parkway. The Voyager then hit a 2003 Jeep that was trying to turn onto Motor Parkway. The brothers were passengers in the Voyager, The driver of the Cadillac suffered minor injuries. Police urged residents to stay off the roadways until conditions improve.
Right-of-Way Issues
With the recent storm ravaging the entire Eastern seaboard, traffic lights at numerous city intersections are still inoperable. As authorities advise, it is best to avoid driving during as well as soon after stormy weather conditions. In New York City, there were significant issues with flooding and power outages affecting the roadways.
It is important to know and understand that under New York law, when you are driving through an intersection where the traffic signal is not working, it should be treated as a four-way stop. This means that the vehicle, which gets to the intersection first, would have the right-of-way.
Compensation for Accident Victims
Street intersection accidents can have devastating consequences. Injuries that may be sustained in such accidents include broken bones, head injuries, spinal cord damage and internal injuries. In such cases, the at-fault motorists can be held liable for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, loss of earnings and benefits, cost of hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
