Brooklyn Truck Collision Fatally Injures Woman

A woman who was pushing a child in a stroller across Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn was struck and killed the morning of Sept. 2 by the driver of a flatbed truck. According to Streetsblog.org, the fatal pedestrian accident involved a 62-year-old woman who was crossing Myrtle at Bedford Avenue as she was pushing a stroller. She was struck by the 38-year-old truck driver who was eastbound on Myrtle Avenue. The driver remained at the scene and wasn’t charged.

Pedestrian and Traffic Accidents

The victim was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her severe injuries. The 1-year-old girl in the stroller was also rushed to the hospital, but the nature and extent of her injuries is not known. Streetsblog reports that Myrtle Avenue is one of the most dangerous roads in the borough thanks to a narrow, two-way configuration, and also one of the busiest truck routes in the area. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victims here.

So far, this year alone, there have already been 42 reported crashes on just the half-mile stretch of Myrtle between Classon and Nostrand avenues, including the site of this crash. Those crashes involved seven bicyclists, two pedestrians and 13 motorists according to city statistics. 2021 has become the deadliest year for city roadways since Mayor Bill de Blasio took over on Jan. 1, 2014 and launched his Vision Zero Initiative. Through Sept. 1, 172 people have been killed on city roadways including 80 pedestrians and 17 cyclists or micro-mobility (small vehicles operating below 15mph) users. This is the highest traffic fatality number since 2013 when 181 people died.

Liability Issues

Pedestrian accidents have the potential to cause major injuries or even fatalities, as seen in the case of this street-intersection collision. Some of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents, particularly those involving large trucks, include driving at excessive speeds, inattention, driving while distracted and failing to yield to a pedestrian. Drivers are required to exercise care and caution and look out for pedestrians walking at intersections.

When the pedestrian accident involves a commercial or delivery truck, victims or families may be able to seek compensation not just from the truck driver, but also his or her employer or the truck’s owner. An experienced New York pedestrian accident lawyer will be able to provide victims and their families with more information about pursuing their rights and seeking maximum compensation in such cases.
