Bronx Hit-and-Run Crash Fatally Injures Pedestrian

A 37-year-old man was killed in an accident in the Bronx, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a Pix11.com news report, officers responded to a call of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle the morning of June 16. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim with serious injuries lying on the pavement. The hit-and-run accident occurred near the intersection of Austin Place and Bruckner Boulevard in the Woodstock section of the Bronx. The severely injured pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation showed that the pedestrian was trying to cross the southbound Bruckner Boulevard service road, from the west side to the east side of the street. Officials said he was outside of the crosswalk when the vehicle hit him and fled the scene, continuing southbound on Bruckner Boulevard. The authorities are looking for the driver of a brown or tan Chevy Tahoe in connection with the fatal hit and run. The investigation is ongoing.

Statistics and the Law

According to the website CityLimits.org, the number of hit-and-runs in New York City has increased 26 percent, from roughly 36,000 incidents in 2013 to 46,000 in 2017.
Most of those crashes involve damage to property, not people. But in 2017, more than 5,000 hit-and-runs resulted in injury¬ – a 14 percent increase since 2013. At least one person was killed in a hit-and-run crash each week in 2017, according to figures cited by the New York City Council.
Under New York law, it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash. Motorists are required to stop immediately and remain at the scene of the crash, exchange pertinent information with other parties involved in the collision and to render aid to the injured victims. Hit-and-run victims often face tremendous hardships because in addition to grief and emotional trauma, they are left to deal with sudden expenses such as medical and funeral costs.

Seeking Compensation

If you have been injured in a hit-and-run crash, it is important that you take a number of steps including filing a police report, gathering evidence from the scene and getting prompt medical attention, etc. You should also contact an experienced New York City hit-and-run lawyer promptly.
Please remember if a hit-and-run driver has injured you, you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy even though the driver has not been identified or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. You definitely should retain an experienced motor vehicle accident lawyer immediately in these situations, because these are tricky and complex cases with a lot of pitfalls.
Victims who have been injured in pedestrian accidents may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. It is important to remember that pedestrian accident victims may be able to seek compensation for injuries or losses in a collision even if they were not walking in a marked crosswalk.
