A Bronx woman who struck and killed 19-year-old Nishath Jannath of Woodside in March has been arrested in connection with the fatal pedestrian accident. According to a report on QNS.com, 39-year-old Mayra Cruz was arrested the morning of June 3. Police say Cruz was driving a private sanitation truck on Roosevelt Avenue the night of March 29 when she struck Jannath, who was crossing 62nd Street in the northern crosswalk. Police found the teen unconscious under the right side of the garbage truck. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Jannath deceased at the scene.
Jannath was returning home after picking up a birthday cake for her little sister, family members said. Cruz was arrested more than nine weeks after the crash following an investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad. She was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian resulting in injury and failure to use due care resulting in serious injury. Jannath was struck about half a mile from her home in a crosswalk. Woodside’s Bangladeshi community rallied at the intersection on May 15 calling on the city to improve safety conditions along Roosevelt Avenue.
