Brain Injury Treatment Disappoints in Study

The search for effective brain injury treatments has suffered a major setback after a study found no benefits from a supplement, citicoline, which the U.S. military had hoped would help wounded troops. According to an Associated Press news report, the supplement is marketed as a memory booster online and in over-the-counter powders and drinks. Doctors in many other countries use this supplement to treat traumatic brain injuries and strokes. However, so far, evidence on whether it works has been mixed, the article states.
A group of scientists in the United States conducted the study hoping that large doses of the citicoline would help speed up recovery for patients who had suffered brain injuries from car crashes, falls, sports accidents and other causes. However, after much rigorous testing, experts found that the supplement worked “no better than dummy treatments” at reducing brain injury-related issues such as forgetfulness, attention issues and difficulties with focusing.
Hope Scarce for Brain Injury Victims
This study involved 1,213 patients aged 18 and older who were hospitalized with brain injuries at eight of the country’s trauma centers. Their injuries ranged from mild to severe and their symptoms ranged from dizziness to loss of consciousness and even brain bleeding. Also, 73 patients died during the study, which appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
This study unfortunately does not offer much hope for the 1 million or more Americans who suffer traumatic brain injuries each year. Of these patients, 53,000 die. Thousands of service members are also affected by traumatic brain injuries each year. There is still no effective treatment that can cure brain injuries. The effects of a traumatic brain injury can last a lifetime. Patients may never be able to return to the life they once had. They may never again be able to go back to work and earn a livelihood for their families. Some may not even be able to perform everyday activities such as caring for themselves.
Compensation in TBI Cases
When a brain injury occurs due to the negligence of someone else, injured victims and their families can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, continued treatment costs, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
