A 57-year-old man crashed his boat into a jetty in Sag Harbor Bay late on July 6 seriously injuring two passengers and then leaving the scene without reporting it, police said. According to a report on GreaterLongIsland.com, Peter Mangiameli of Southampton faces a number of criminal charges, including second- and third-degree assault and failing to report the boat accident. State police said Mangiameli was operating a 35-foot cruise boat with eight passengers aboard when the vessel struck a stone jetty.
Two Passengers Seriously Injured
Two passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries including a broken rib, a leg fracture and a vertebral fracture, police said. The wreck also caused significant damage to the boat, officials said. After the crash, they said, Mangiameli docked the boat nearby where Sag Harbor police officers responded and treated the injured passengers. Authorities also stated that Mangiameli left the scene even as the victims were receiving medical attention.
The New York State Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the investigation and tracked down and arrested Mangiameli, officials said. He has also been charged with failing to provide an ID after a personal injury accident, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless operation of a vessel and multiple violations of state navigation law, state police said.
