A woman was fatally injured in bicycle accident Chelsea when a tractor-trailer hit her. According to a CBS New York news report, the fatal bicycle crash occurred near West 24th Street and 6th Avenue. Witnesses said the 20-year-old female bicyclist was on her way to make a delivery when the large truck struck her and kept going. They said the victim was launched about two or three feet into the air due to the collision and landed hard on the street. The helmet she was wearing did nothing to protect her, those who saw the horrific crash said.
Fatal Head Trauma
A witness stopped the truck driver several blocks up the road and told him to turn around. By the time the truck driver returned to the intersection where the collision occurred, police were already there. The victim was rushed to a local hospital with severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival. The truck driver was taken into custody for questioning. He reportedly said he did not see the bicyclist and that she must have hit the back of his truck. A witness said the truck was speeding at 45 mph.
The truck driver was not arrested, but was issued several equipment violations for minor problems with his truck. Friends said the bicyclist was a delivery person on her way uptown when she was hit. Bicycle accidents claim a number of lives in the city each year. Police said there have been 10 bicycle fatalities in New York City to date in 2019 compared to seven deaths during all of 2018. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of the young bicycle accident victim.
Compensation for Victims and Families
Bicycle accidents have the potential to result in life-changing injuries that may take away livelihoods and any semblance of normalcy in the victim’s as well as his or her family’s lives. Because bicyclists have very little protection in these types of crashes, they also face the danger of suffering major or even fatal injuries. Often, in such cases, the at-fault driver can be held liable for the resulting injuries, damages and losses. In addition, if the driver was on the job at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable.
It is important for victims of bicycle accidents to take a number of steps and protect their rights. These steps include filing a police report; getting prompt medical attention and treatment for your injuries; securing as much evidence as possible from the scene; and retaining the services of an experienced NYC bicycle accident lawyer who will fight to protect your rights every step of the way.
Victims who have been injured in bicycle accidents may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families of deceased bicycle accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as lost future income, funeral costs, medical expenses, pain and suffering, etc. An experienced personal injury lawyer will be able to guide you through what can quickly become a complex process and help you maximize the compensation you receive.
