A 57-year-old man was critically injured in a bicycle accident on the City Island Bridge in the Bronx the night of July 24. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the driver of an SUV hit the bicyclist as he was going across the bridge. The driver, a 39-year-old woman, was heading east across the bridge, which connects City Island to the Rodman Neck section of the Bronx, police said. Medics rushed the bicyclist to Jacobi Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Photos from the scene posted by the Daily News showed the victim’s bicycle with a bent front wheel lying next to the SUV, a sneaker resting on the car’s dented hood and its windshield shattered. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was not arrested, the report said. The investigation into this incident is still ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the critically injured bicyclist. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Major Injuries in Bicycle Accidents
Bicycle accidents caused by negligent (careless) drivers often result in catastrophic injuries as bicyclists have little protection against the force of a collision. One of the most common and serious injuries in such cases is a traumatic brain injury, which can occur even when a rider is wearing a helmet. Such injuries often lead to memory loss, cognitive impairment, personality and behavior changes and even permanent disabilities.
Spinal cord injuries are also common in bicycle accidents, and can lead to partial or complete paralysis, requiring lifelong medical care and rehabilitation. Bicyclists also frequently suffer multiple fractures including broken arms, legs, ribs, hips and collarbones, which may require surgery and extensive physical therapy.
Internal injuries, such as damage to the lungs, liver, spleen, or other organs, can be life-threatening if not treated immediately. Severe road rash can lead to infections, permanent scarring, and nerve damage while facial injuries and dental trauma often require reconstructive procedures. Beyond the physical harm, many bicycle accident victims experience emotional trauma such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
If another driver’s negligence (carelessness) caused your injuries, you may be entitled to compensation for damages including but not limited to medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc. If you have lost a loved one in a bicycle accident, you may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault parties seeking compensation for your losses.
